  • The first tone is high and level
  • The second tone rises moderately
  • The third tone falls and then rises
  • The fourth tone starts out high but drops sharply

* Tones are vital to mastering pinyin as the same pinyin with different tones can represent complete different Chinese Characters. For example, " 哪 (nǎ)” is “where" and "那(nà)” is “there".

Dates

  • 年(nián)-- year, 2016年, 2017年，新年(new year)...
  • 月(yuè)-- month, 七月(July)，八月(August)...
  • 日/号(rì/hào)-- day, 1日(1st), 2日(2nd)...

*For example, “今天是2016 年7月 31日。" -- "Today is 31st of July, 2016. "

  • 点(diǎn)--o'clock， 一点，两点，三点...
  • 一刻(yi kè)--a quarter, 两点一刻，三点一刻...
  • 半(bàn)--half an hour, 两点半，三点半...
  • 三刻(sān kè)--three quarters， 两点三刻，三点三刻...

*For example:

Q: 现在(是)几点了？[xiàn zài (shì) jǐ diǎn le?] (What’s the time now?)
A: 现在是两点一刻。(xiàn zài shì liǎng diǎn yī kè.) (It is quarter past two now.)

Sentences

  • 我早上八点去上班 (wǒ zǎo shàng bā diǎn qù shàng bān).--I go to work at eight in the morning.
  • 他早上八点坐公共汽车去学校(tā zǎo shàng bā diǎn zuò gōng gòng qì chē qù xué xiào).--He goes to school by bus at eight in the morning.
