Qīxī jié—Qixi Festival

The Qixi festival stems from a legend of a beautiful fairy whose name is “Zhī nǚ” and an honest cowboy called “Niú láng” who fell in love. They secretly got married and had two lovely children. However, the beautiful fairy, Zhī nǚ’s mother, wáng mǔ niáng niáng,  found her daughter and took her away. Niú láng and his children were distraught. Niú láng's magical cow, told him where Zhī nǚ was. Niú láng decided to go and look for his wife. Finally, on 七月七日(qī yuè qī rì)(7th of July) he found her, but wáng mǔ niáng niáng used magic to create the milky way as a barrier between them. Once again they were separated. Just then a huge group of magpies gathered and formed a large bridge for them to cross and meet. From then they only could use the magpie bridge to meet each other once a year on the same date, the 7th day and 7thmonth in the lunar calendar. Chinese people named this day Qīxī, which is also known as the Chinese Valentine Day.
